We are historic, but green.

We are a historic hotel, it is true. We have been witnesses to Trieste since the early 1900s. But historic does not mean dated. On the contrary. We consider ourselves Contemporary Classics. And that is how we approached our renovation. A hushed style from another era, with cutting-edge sustainability solutions to try to add our drop to the ocean.

We followed the LEED for Interior Design and Construction-Hospitality guidelines. And we achieved Gold certification. The first historic building in the world to obtain it in its new, far more stringent version.

The first in the world. And it is no coincidence.

The Continentale does not live off nostalgia. It is the first historic building in the world to have obtained the LEED ID+C Hospitality v4.1 Gold certification, the international protocol developed by the U.S. Green Building Council that measures and evaluates the sustainability of a building in every aspect: energy efficiency, indoor air quality, responsible use of water resources, choice of materials, overall environmental impact. A score of 70 points, achieved within a building from 1875, while preserving its historic character intact. It is not an ordinary operation. In Italy only 10 hotels have obtained this certification, 192 worldwide. To enter this list, for a historic property, means having made courageous and concrete choices, not just declarations of intent. Because taking care of a place, for us, also means taking care of what will come after.

What we did

Doors and skirting boards

We selected those with low environmental impact, considering energy consumption and emission control, waste generation and disposal during production (EPD, PEFC, FSC, VOC certifications).

Tiles

We chose them beautiful, certainly, but above all with low energy consumption throughout their life cycle, from production to disposal (EPD certification).

Mortars and adhesives

We paid attention to volatile components, not only for the environment, but also to improve the quality of the air you breathe (EPD, VOC certifications).

Paints

Paints and colours have low volatile components for better air quality, chosen from companies that monitor the environmental impact of their products at every stage of production and disposal (EPD, VOC certifications).

Parquet

The wood comes from sustainable forests without deforestation, with attention to biodiversity safeguarding, water resource conservation and respect for local communities (EPD, C2C, PEFC, VOC certifications).

Carpet

We chose it by archi-star Patricia Urquiola, and not only for its colour, which embraces. But because its environmental impact is low, its volatile components are low for healthy air, while its social commitment is high, including the care the company devotes to its workers (EPD, C2C, VOC certifications).

Sanitaryware

Functional, comfortable, designed and good for the environment. Throughout their life cycle, from low-impact production to attention to waste materials (EPD certification).

Taps

Here the motto is: the bare minimum. All our taps and toilet cisterns reduce traditional water waste by approximately 35%, meeting the "EPA WaterSense" water efficiency standards.
